Den Hoorn ZH 1

After my visit to De Lier I took the next bus to the next village: Den Hoorn. The village was founded around 1100 as part of the Hof van Delft (Court of Delft area). In 1817 the territory of Hof van Delft, including Den Hoorn and other villages, became a separate municipality that existed until 1921. Den Hoorn was added to the municipality of Schipluiden. In the early 18th century a lot of orchards and vegetable gardens were laid out in the area. These evolved into the modern horticulture that can be found now, although less and less, around Den Hoorn.
In 2004 the municipalities of Schipluiden and Maasland merged into the new municipality of Midden‑Delfland with Den Hoorn as the largest town.

The post office is located in the Primera shop in the town centre. It was very busy, but fortunately not at the post office window. I was back at the bus stop within ten minutes. The stamp I used was from the sheetlet to celebrate the 50th birthday of King Willem-Alexander in 2017. The postmark only has Den Hoorn in it, instead of the postally used Den Hoorn ZH. The abbreviation of the province of Zuid-Holland was added (like in Rijswijk ZH) to prevent confusion with Den Hoorn on the island of Texel (Den Hoorn Texel) and the city of Hoorn in Noord-Holland (Hoorn NH). On 1 July 2018 Primera Den Hoorn got new owners. The post office remained part of the shop.
