Poeldijk is a village in the Dutch province of South
Holland. It is a part of the municipality of Westland, and lies about 8 km
southwest of The Hague. Poeldijk dates back to the 13th century as name of a
dyke along the river Gantel where some farms were built together with a small
chapel. The land was very fertile and therefore attracted farmers. After the
introduction of heated glasshouses in 1897 Poeldijk became the centre of
viticulture in the Netherlands. Poeldijk has the largest catholic church in Westland,
St. Bartholemew Church built in 1924 to 1926.
